Hangi 2019 by Evelyn and Rayner.

In Week 4 of this term, we had our school hangi. We had a wonderful time.

The day before the hangi we spent some time with our teina from Room 3 peeling veggies. We had fun and some of the children were super expert peelers!

the next morning, the parents lit the fire super early. It was windy and a bit chilly. I watched the fire burn when I got to school and the parents putting the irons on the fire to heat up for hangi.

Late in the morning they dug out the ashes and put the irons back in. Then cabbage leaves were laid down in the baskets and then the basket went in with all the kai. Then the wet sheets and sacks went over the top and finally, the dirt was placed on top of that so it cooked.

While the hangi was cooking, we waited around the pit and watched. Ashes and steam were flying around everywhere. Then a few hours later the hangi was finished cooking. Then the people who were helping us began to dig it out and uncover the food. Loads of steam poured out into the crowds of children, parents and teachers. Lunch was ready!

Once the hangi was lifted out onto the ute, Justin drove it over to all the children who were watching and the year 5 and 6 students performed a haka powhiri. Then all the food went into the hall for the parents to dish up to the hungry kids. It seemed to take a little while, probably because it smelt good and we were hungry!

We finally got our food and gobbled it down. Some lucky kids got seconds too. Perrin ate ALL of the kumara. It was a great day and we had loads of fun. A big thank you to all our whanau and staff who made such a wonderful day for us. By Rayner and Evelyn.

Costumes!

This year the Middle and Senior Syndicate are doing a Production called Toto’s Wizard of Oz. All of the children have chosen to do specific parts in the production. For example, dance, costumes, art, and acting.

The Middle and Senior costume group are working so hard to design mind-blowing costumes. One of the most challenging was the crows and the winged monkeys. For the wings on the crows we first got some fairy wings. Then Mrs Mcauliffe brought black fabric. We used the black fabric and cut into shaped feathers. Then we glued the pieces of black fabric onto the fairy wings to look like crow wings. Then we painted the wings so it is fully black like a crow. We let the wings dry and they were finished.

One of the other things the costume group made was the crown for the good witch of the north. First, we cut out a fancy looking pink crown. Then we traced it on pink cardboard. Then we added a bunch of sparkly glitter and jewels to make it look even more fancy. It is breathtaking!

We would not have been able to do this without all the helpful volunteers, they are an amazing group of very talented women! Thank you to Roseanne Holmes, Heather Obruchkova, Kay Johnston, Alison Richmond and Sarah Mahy. Each one has spent lots of their own time helping us create and finish children’s costumes and props. A huge thanks to all that helped in 2019.

We cannot wait for you all to see our amazing shows next week. We hope you enjoy them as much as we have enjoyed making them for you!
